Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the 11th inning, the Orioles sent Trumbo to the plate to try and break the deadlock and he did just that, sending a moonshot 380 feet into left-centre field on Monday.
After American League (AL) wildcard devastation last season against the Blue Jays, Baltimore began 2017 with a bit of redemption — though it would gladly switch wins — by beating Toronto. Trumbo finished the game two for five with a home run and two RBIs.
Kevin Gausman drew the opening day start for Baltimore, and he gave up just two runs in a little over five innings. He struck out four batters, but also issued four walks.
The Los Angeles Dodgers were at their free-flowing best in a 14-3 rout of the San Diego Padres.
Joc Pederson starred as Clayton Kershaw struck out eight and walked none in his seventh consecutive opening day start.
The New York Mets crushed the Atlanta Braves 6-0, the Kansas City Royals were no match for the Minnesota Twins losing 7-1, the Boston Red Sox defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-3, the Houston Astros shut out the Seattle Mariners 3-0, the Washington Nationals were too good for the Miami Marlins 4-2, the Cleveland Indians beat the Texas Rangers 8-5, the Colorado Rockies outlasted the Milwaukee Brewers 7-5, the Philadelphia Phillies edged the Cleveland Reds 4-3 and the Los Angeles Angels lost 4-2 to the Oakland Athletics.
Meanwhile, the Chicago White Sox’s season opener against the Detroit Tigers was postponed due to rain.
REYNOLDS LEADS ROCKIES
Mark Reynolds helped ease the Rockies’ pain over losing Ian Desmond to a spring training injury.
The 33-year-old veteran first baseman led Colorado to a win over the Brewers by collecting two hits, two runs scored, a home run, three RBIs and a walk.
PEDERSON HITS GRAND SLAM
Pederson hit a grand slam during an absolute rout of the Padres as the Dodgers hit a franchise-record four home runs to start the season.
SANTANA STARS FOR TWINS
On a day featuring numerous aces, Ervin Santana (1-0) turned in one of the best pitching performances. The Twins star tossed seven innings, allowing just two hits and one run and striking out three batters.
Santana became the first starting pitcher in Twins franchise history to throw seven-plus innings while allowing two or fewer hits on opening day since Walter Johnson in 1915.
TIGERS AND WHITE SOX FINALLY SET TO BATTLE
This game was scheduled for Monday, but rain forced a postponement. Justin Verlander will still face-off against Jose Quintana at Guaranteed Rate Field on Tuesday. Having watched every other team kick off their 2017 season, both the Tigers and White Sox should be anxious to play. Unfortunately, rain is in the forecast all week.
