Thompson sprained his right thumb in Tuesday’s game against the Orlando Magic and will not play in at least the next two games - on Wednesday at the Celtics and on Friday against the Atlanta Hawks, the team announced.

The 26-year-old’s run of 447 consecutive games played is a franchise record and the longest active streak in the NBA, and his injury could hardly have come at a worse time for Cleveland.

Their Celtics is a showdown for first place in the Eastern Conference, with both teams sitting at 50-27 entering the contest. The Cavaliers have won three in a row entering the game, but they’re still trying to right themselves after going 7-10 in March.

Thompson is averaging 8.1 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.
