The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has set its sights on “a web of development” across the Coastal Plain—“the biological heart of the Arctic Refuge,” says Garett Rose, a staff attorney with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). “Here’s what that looks like: drill pads, roads, pipelines, barging stations, gravel mines, and processing facilities. This web of industrial infrastructure will damage the sensitive Arctic ecosystem irreversibly,” he told Newsweek....

Marshall Billingslea told the Hudson Institute on Thursday that he spoke to Russia’s deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov about the importance of involving Beijing in future nuclear arms control negotiations. The special presidential envoy also said U.S. and Russian officials had “concrete ideas” for their next meeting on arms control talks, and had settled on a venue for discussions. Speaking to the Hudson Institute, Billingslea said that he discussed the “crucial role” compliance played in effective nuclear arms control deals in a call with Ryabkov earlier this week....

The shutdown, which began days before Christmas last year and lasted a total of 35 days, shuttered most of the government’s discretionary operations and left around 800,000 federal employees without continuous pay. As hundreds of thousands of workers were furloughed, many critical government operations ground to a halt: the Food and Drug Administration discontinued food safety inspections and immigration court hearings were routinely canceled, for example. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimated that $11 billion in potential economic growth was sapped from the economy due to the budgetary standoff....

“He was an innocent man,” Trump said Thursday after learning the news. “Now in my book he’s an even greater warrior.” Michael Flynn, who in December 2017 pleaded guilty to a charge of lying to law enforcement officials, had tangled with prosecutors for months over access to potentially exculpatory documents as he reshuffled his legal team and adopted a more hostile approach toward his sentencing. Trump has spoken out about Hart before, telling a rally crowd Friday in Nevada that Hart was “jumping up and down” after Stone’s prison sentence was announced. Without mentioning her by name, Trump called Hart “a radical anti-Trump person, and she didn’t say that when she went up there. And she became the foreperson of the jury. And she did terrible things and said terrible things.” Trump added that Hart’s bias was uncovered “when he was convicted and then a statement was made, she started jumping up and down screaming, ‘Yes, yes,’ and started telling everybody and everybody said, ‘Wait a minute, wasn’t she just a juror?...

The video disappeared from the Trump’s Twitter feed late on Saturday, leaving in its place a message that said: “This media has been disabled in response to a report by the copyright owner.” Trump had retweeted the video, which featured a cover of Linkin Park track In The End, from White House social media director Dan Scavino’s account. But Twitter removed the video after it received a Digital Millennium Copyright Act notice from Machine Shop Entertainment, according to the Lumen Database, which collects and legal complaints and requests for the removal of online materials....

In a new email titled “Patriots Wear Face Masks,” President Donald Trump tells supporters that he is not asking for campaign donations but rather for their help in wearing face masks to curb the spread of the coronavirus. “I don’t love wearing them either,” Trump wrote. “Masks may be good, they may be just okay, or they may be great.” The president went on to refer to the coronavirus as “the China virus,” a familiar remark that has been widely criticized for perpetuating racism against Asian Americans....

His recent tweets about my decision to send all Michigan voters applications to safely vote by mail suggested I had acted illegally in informing our voters about their rights. He was wrong. In Michigan, every registered voter has the right—enshrined by our citizens in our state Constitution—to vote by mail. During a recent appearance on Fox News’ Fox & Friends, Trump was asked by co-host Ainsley Earhardt about recent speculations that Biden wanted to avoid debating him. “What about the debates? Jill Biden was interviewed yesterday by Dana Perino and she said that Joe Biden will be debating you in those three debates, he’s already committed to that,” Earhardt said during the interview. Earhardt also mentioned a recent op-ed written by former White House press secretary Joe Lockhart, who suggested that Biden shouldn’t debate Trump because Trump lies too much....

But on Thursday evening, he walked back remarks that were taken as a threat of intentionally sabotaging postal operations to his political advantage this fall. “If we could agree to an overall bill, which is much bigger than the post office, then that would be fine,” Trump told reporters. During a telephone interview that aired on Fox Business earlier in the day, Trump said that if the postal service doesn’t get an additional $25 billion that Democrats are seeking in the next coronavirus relief package, then the agency wouldn’t have the capacity to successfully handle mail-in ballots anticipated as states try to give voters alternatives to curb the spread of COVID-19....

Trump’s road back to Twitter began after new owner Musk, 51, posted a poll on Friday night asking whether the former president should have his account reinstated. The poll ended with 52 percent voting in favor to reinstate Trump, prompting Musk to bring the account back. When the poll ended, some 15,085,458 people had voted. Musk, who recently bought Twitter for $44 billion, said: “The people have spoken. Trump will be reinstated....

The manager of the Trump National Golf Club Bedminster told members by email on Tuesday that the clubhouse, fitness suite, and restaurants would all close until further notice due to new “social distancing” measures that were released earlier this week by New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D). The email was first reported by The Washington Post. It said one golf course at the resort would remain accessible, but players would not be allowed caddies or motor carts....

More than 150,000 people have died of COVID-19 as the virus has swept the country and cases continue to spike, with no signs of slowing heading into the fall. Some have floated the idea of expanding vote-by-mail options as a way to avoid crowded lines and the potential of exposure for anyone who wants to cast a ballot. But Trump spent the week railing against mail-in voting, going as far as to float a suggestion that the election should be delayed if it’s so unsafe to have in person—widely seen as a taunt to mail voting advocates....
