In Dallas, officials are expected to reveal their alternative to an Obama-era rule expanding the definition of “waters of the United States” (WOTUS) to include tributaries and other bodies of water not previously covered, and thereby expanding federal protection. Environmentalists describe the proposed rule change as “reckless and capricious” and say it will threaten drinking water for millions of Americans across the country. The final details have not been confirmed but a loosening of the rules is expected to allow more pollutants (organic or otherwise) into waterways, which will particularly affect states downstream, where more contaminants will accumulate....

Mastriano, the Republican nominee for governor of Pennsylvania served as a point person in the state for a plan to keep former President Trump in power following his election loss to Joe Biden, according to a New York Times report. The Washington Post reported Sunday that the president had discussed assassinating Major General Qassem Soleimani—the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ clandestine Quds Force—several times since taking office. Citing unnamed former administration and Pentagon officials, the Post said Trump first suggested killing Soleimani in the spring of 2017, in response to a ballistic missile attack launched by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen against the Saudi capital Riyadh. Morning Consult’s 2024 GOP Primary Tracker found that Trump led the field of likely Republican primary candidates with 48 percent support as of Thursday, giving him a 17-point lead over DeSantis. The Florida governor was in second place and enjoyed 31 percent support, outpacing former Vice President Mike Pence at 8 percent and former Representative Liz Cheney at 3 percent. The survey was conducted from January 14 to 16 among 3,763 potential Republican primary voters and had a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percent....

Although a small faction of the GOP remains staunchly opposed to Trump, the vast majority of Republicans continue to view him favorably, and a significant majority want him to seek the presidency again. Given that the Tron series hasn’t seen a new cinematic entry since 2010’s Tron: Legacy, and no canonical new installments since the cancelation of the animated series Tron: Uprising, many had assumed that Disney was done with the franchise, especially given rumors of a cinematic reboot allegedly in the works. Thankfully Tron lives, and despite being set in the far-flung future, director Mike Bithell has already confirmed that Tron: Identity will reference events from past entries in the franchise, possibly including a few of the most important storylines....

Ahead of landfall which is expected on Sunday, evacuations have been ordered for parts of Lafourche Parish including Port Fourchon, about 100 miles south of New Orleans. In a release at around 8:00 a.m. EST on Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) confirmed that the storm had been recorded with wind speeds of up to 40 mph about 50 miles from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in the Caribbean.
