The January 6 House Select Committee this week issued four criminal referrals against Trump at the culmination of its investigation into his actions regarding the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. The referrals were for obstruction of an official proceeding, conspiracy to defraud the U.S., conspiracy to make a false statement and to “incite,” “assist,” or “aid or comfort” an insurrection. Trump’s legal team could use the First Amendment’s free speech protection as a defense if charges are brought....

The Supreme Court said Thursday that its investigation into the leak was unable to identify those responsible for allowing a draft of the Dobbs v. West joins state senator Don Huffines from Dallas, podcast host Chad Prather and Reform Party candidate Patrick Wynne among the official candidates vying to unseat Abbott, who has been governor of Texas since 2015. Special counsel John Durham, who led a 3 1/2-year probe that looked into the details of the 2016 FBI Trump-Russia collusion report, was asked to investigate suspected financial crimes that involved Trump, according to a report released by The New York Times on Thursday. The report revealed that Durham at that time opened a probe into potential financial crimes involving Trump after former Attorney General William Barr asked him to do so....

The Republican incumbent will address three rallies on Monday, starting in Allentown and followed by Lititz and Martinsburg. Ahead of Trump’s visit, Former Governor of South Carolina and UN ambassador Nikki Haley will tout the president’s cause in the state on Sunday at a “Make America Great Again!” rally, while Tiffany Trump will speak at a “Jewish Voices for Trump” event on the same day. Speaking on an MSNBC panel earlier today, Joyce Vance, a former federal prosecutor, argued that the GOP is allowing Trump absolute power. Jim McDougal’s relationships with top Arkansas politicians date back to the 1960s, when he and Jim Guy Tucker, today Arkansas’s governor, were Young Democrat activists. The Trump administration resumed federal executions last summer, despite criticism over the risks posed by the pandemic. 11 inmates have been put to death since federal execution resumed. Five of them were executed in July and August alone—Daniel Lewis Lee, Wesley Purkey, Dustin Honken, Lezmond Mitchell and Keith Nelson. The estimated cost of executing those five men was more than $4.61 million, according to details of expenditures provided by the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) in response to a Freedom of Information Act request by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and obtained by Newsweek....
